Long before the first vineyards took root, the land was home to bird now lost to history. Fossilised remains discovered near a nearby gold mine remind us of the creatures that once moved through this rugged landscape, unseen yet present.
Ghost Bird draws its name from this vanished species, a symbol of what was, and a reminder of our role in shaping what remains. At dusk, when the lavender-hued sky melts into the vineyard rows, some say you can feel its presence, a fleeting shadow between the vines, a whisper of wings that were once here. It is imagined as the silent guardian of the land, a watcher of the vines, patient, mysterious, and deeply connected to place.
Each vintage of Ghost Bird carries more than just the essence of Central Otago’s terroir. It carries a story: a narrative of loss, legacy, and quiet reverence for the natural world. As our vineyards grow and thrive, a portion of proceeds from Ghost Bird will support initiatives that restore balance to the environment, from local pest-control efforts to broader conservation movements, so that future generations might know the land’s richness, and perhaps imagine the ghosts that
still watch over it.
With every pour, Ghostbird invites you into a world where history, nature, and imagination meet. It is a wine to savour, to reflect upon, and to share, a reminder that beauty, once lost, can still inspire.

Ghost Bird is crafted from grapes grown at Waikerikeri Station, a 47-hectare single vineyard set in the heart of Central Otago.
This land is as dramatic as it is demanding. In winter, temperatures plunge to –10°C, while in summer, the sun scorches the valley with highs of 38°C. These sharp contrasts, combined with long, dry days and cool nights, deliver slow, balanced ripening and fruit of remarkable concentration and purity.
The soils across the vineyard are consistent: free-draining quartz gravels with around 4% organic matter.
This lean, stony earth naturally restricts vine vigour, encouraging deep roots and small, flavour-packed berries. Waikerikeri is planted to a diverse range of Pinot Noir clones — 777, 667, 115, 114, UCD 5, and the Abel clone, each contributing its own nuance to the blend, from lifted aromatics to structure, spice, and depth.
Sustainability is at the core of Ghost Bird. The vineyard now holds its own accreditation under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ), reflecting a commitment to working in balance with the land.
Every bottle of Ghost Bird is not only an expression of Central Otago’s extraordinary terroir but also a promise to preserve and protect it for future generations.
